Typing Test
If the clerical position you are applying for requires typing (listed under minimum qualifications on the position posting), you must complete a typing test. Some positions require light typing while others require typing with speed and accuracy. Positions requiring light typing require a typing score of at least 25 wpm. Positions requiring typing with speed and accuracy require a typing score of at least 40 wpm. Typing tests are administered by appointment only and take approximately thirty minutes.
Clerical Skills Test
Clerical and administrative support positions also require successful completion of a skills and abilities test. The clerical skills test is administered on a computer and will identify applicants who have the skills and abilities required for the job. The test includes four components: Following Policies and Procedures; Practical Office Problem Solving; Understanding Business Communication; and Comparing and Proofing. Tests are administered by appointment only and will take approximately 1 and 1/2 hours. Don’t worry if you are not familiar with computers, you will have time to become familiar with the computer prior to taking the test. More information about the test, including sample test questions, is available in our Candidate Information Booklet.
If you are interested in taking the typing and/or clerical skills tests, please contact Employment Service Center at (313) 577-2010 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Upon request, persons with disabilities will be given reasonable accommodations to facilitate their participation in the testing process. Only those candidates who provide acceptable picture identification will be allowed to test.
Re-Test Policy
If a candidate does not pass the clerical and typing tests the tester will be allowed to re-schedule and re-take the test after 30 days. A tester is allowed to take the test once every 30 days. Candidates will not be required to re-take the entire test, only the portions of the test that were not originally passed.
You Passed – Now What Happens?
If you are successful in the testing process, your scores will be added to your application and will be forwarded to the hiring managers for the positions that close after you have completed the testing process. Therefore, you should continue to apply for positions you are interested in that match your qualifications.
