Ad-Hoc Reports

Ad-Hoc Reports are reports that typically meet an immediate need with little or no documentation.  They are limited, infrequent, and outside of regular university business practices.  They change very frequently and have a limited audience.

Auto Hint

The automatic display of a message when the cursor enters a field on a form.

Banner

Banner is database in which we store all the data related to WSU administrative areas . Banner's ability to combine all the administrative areas into a single database gives us a strong reporting ability with good data dependability.

Block

An information area on a form separated by a beveled line.

Cancel

Exits you from an Option List, List of Values, Editor window, or Dynamic Help.

Clear Form

Clears all information and returns you to the first enterable field in the key information area.

Cognos ReportNet

Cognos ReportNet is a suite of reporting applications used to create and run reports.  It is accessible through a Web browser.

Commit

Saves all changes entered since the last time you saved.

Count Hits

In query mode, counts the number of records that meet the search criteria and displays that number in the Auto Hint Line.

Count Query Hits

In query mode, counts the number of records that meet the search criteria and displays that number in the Auto Hint Line. To retrieve records, select the Execute Query Function.

Data Marts

Data Marts stores information from Banner in a related way for useful reporting.

Database

A collection of tables used to store data.

Dialog Box

A box containing information. Requires you to respond to it before you can continue.

Drop-Down List

A drop-down list shows three or more values for a field. Any field with a down arrow icon contains a drop-down list.

E-Reports

E-Reports is a reporting tool that allows WSU staff to look at its data in a meaningful way.  They help us do things right and make good choices.

Edit

Displays a window you can use to add, change, or delete text; especially useful in entering updating Dynamic Help.

Enter Query

Puts the form into query mode and lets you enter search criteria to see what information is already in the database. Enter-Query appears in the Status Line.

Execute Query

In query mode, searches the database and displays any records that match the search criteria.

Exit

Exits you out of the form or window. From menus, exits you out of the Banner system. From query mode, cancels the query and takes the form out of query mode.

Exit with Value

From a called form, returns you to the calling form and enters the highlighted value into the field that called the form. From a List of Values (LOV), returns you to the calling form and enters the highlighted value into the field that called the form.

Exit without Value

From forms and windows, exits you out of the form or window. From menus, exits you out of the Banner system. From query mode, cancels the query and takes the form out of query mode.

Field

Area in a form where you can enter, query, change information, or where existing information is displayed. Banner describes fields as either enabled, disabled, enterable, or display only.

Form

Window containing enterable fields for a process.

Function keys

Specific keystrokes or keystroke combinations equivalent to a  selection on a menu.

Hired

Actual commencement of employment of an employee for wages or other remuneration.

Immigrant

An alien who has been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.

Key Block

Appears at the top of each Banner form and used as the query criteria required to access data.

Menu

A list of options you can access with the mouse or keyboard.

Menu Bar

Located at the top of the screen, below the form name and Title Bar, the Menu Bar has a list a series of options (e.g. File, Edit, etc) available on a specific form.

More…

Appears at the bottom right of a Banner form and indicates more windows for this form.

Next Block

Means to move the cursor to the next information area (block) that has at least one enterable field.

Next Field

The next enterable field in the current information area.

Next Item

The next enterable field in the current information area.

Next Record

Means to move the cursor to the first enterable field in the next record of the current information area. If the cursor is in the last record, a new record is created.

Non-immigrant

An alien admitted to the United States for a specific purpose for a temporary stay that will end when its purpose has been accomplished.

Object

An object can be a form, job, menu or Quick Flow used in Banner.

Option List

Dialog box displaying two or more items to choose from.

Pop-Up Window

Dialog box, alert box, or list of values that appear in a separate window.

Previous Block

The previous information area that has at least one enterable field. If the previous area is another window, then that window is opened.

Previous Field

Means to move the cursor to the previous enterable field in the current information area.

Previous Item

Means to move the cursor to the previous enterable field in the current information area.

Previous Record

Means to move the cursor to the first enterable field in the previous record.

Query

The ability to look up data in the Banner database.

Quick Flow

A set of forms linked together in order to help you complete a process within Banner. When you use Quick Flow, it opens the first form in the set and the next form is automatically opened until the process is completed.

Record

All information displayed in the window for an item.

ReportNet

Cognos ReportNet is a suite of reporting applications used to create and run reports.  It is accessible through a Web browser.

Rollback

From an application or inquiry form, clears all information and returns you to the first enterable field in the key information area. Rollback is a standard button and appears on most forms. From validation forms, rollback will return you to the first enterable field on the form. From a query form it will return you to the first enterable field on the calling form.

Save

Means to save all changes entered.

Scroll Bar

A horizontal or vertical bar that appears at the side or bottom of a Banner form window. Clicking the arrows at the ends of the Scroll Bar will move the window and display additional information.

Scroll Down

The process of moving down repeating records or lists of information that cannot all be displayed in one window.

Security

The way Banner keeps unauthorized users from making changes to the system. Also controls the codes you're able to use when you enter information via a Banner form. Security is determined based on your Banner job role definition.

Select

Choose an item by highlighting it or clicking it with mouse.

Show Keys

Display the list of keyboard options.

Standard Certified Reports

Standard Certified Reports (SCRs) are reports that are certified by System Custodians as providing accurate and consistent data that meet the common and/or routine reporting needs of the units.

Status Line

Displays at the bottom of a form and provides information about the number of records displayed and whether all records have been displayed. The * denotes that all records have been displayed.

Table

The Oracle structure that holds information inside a database. A table organizes information in columns and rows, so the information is easy to manipulate; for example, you can sort, filter, find, combine, or add information.

Title Bar

Located at the extreme top of a Banner form, the Title Bar displays the full name of the form and it's seven character identifier.

Tool Bar

Located under the Menu Bar at the top of a form, the Tool Bar contains icons that are used to navigate through the form.

U. S. Citizen

A person born in the United States, or naturalized citizen holding a U.S. passport.

Window

Displays an information area.

WSU Employee

Faculty, academic, non-professional, non academic staff, clerical and professional technicians or student workers who are new hires or current employers re-verifying employment eligibility.
