Employee Tuition Assistance

Tuition assistance is available to employees (not including faculty) under the guidelines and terms of the appropriate collective bargaining agreement or university policy.

Generally, during the academic school year (fall, winter and spring/summer terms) eligible full-time employees can take the greater of one class or four credit hours for one term and the greater of two classes or six credit hours per term for two terms. Employees represented by P&A can take the greater of two classes or six credit hours per term. (Examples provided here) This benefit only covers the applicable tuition charge, Omnibus Fee, Registration Fee and Fitness Center Maintenance Fee. Other fees which may be charged (e.g. course material, late registration, SEVIS, etc.) are the responsibility of the Employee.

Eligible fractional-time employees (50% or greater) receive an employee tuition benefit equal to the greater of one class or four credit hours per term. Fractional-time employees are not eligible for the reduced tuition benefit for spouse/child(ren) unless they are employed as a graduate assistant or represented by the AAUP-AFT.

TUITION BENEFITS CALCULATOR
Total Compensation and Wellness has developed a Tuition Benefit Calculator to help employees determine their tuition benefit for a particular semester. Just enter your classes and credit hours, and the calculator will tell you the corresponding tuition benefit and highlight any overages for which you would be responsible.

You will find this new tool at: http://www.hr.wayne.edu/tcw/pdfs/tuition_benefit_calculator.pdf

Please note the following:

  • You must remain on the payroll for the entire term. If you resign or are terminated before the term ends, you will be responsible for payment of the tuition benefit for that term.
  • Classes not taken for a grade (i.e., audited classes) do not qualify for the tuition benefit.
  • If a passing grade is not achieved, the tuition benefit will be forfeited and the individual must reimburse the full amount in accordance with University policy. A passing grade for an undergraduate course is a "D" or better, for graduate course a "C" or better
  • New employees must be on the payroll on the last day of Open Registration to register for a particular term.
  • A separate application must be submitted for each term for which tuition assistance is requested.
  • Courses must be taken after normal working hours. If the course is offered only during working hours, special arrangements may be made for the employee to take the course, however, the following conditions must be met:

    a) The employee's supervisor must be able to arrange adequate coverage of the employee's position.

    b) Time taken off for a credit course is normally deducted from employee's vacation bank. Missed hours may be made up, however, working during lunch is not a satisfactory arrangement for making up lost time.

IMPORTANT: You are required to successfully complete the courses for which you receive tuition assistance. Dropping classes, withdrawing from classes, not passing your classes (including receiving an Incomplete), auditing a class, not finishing the term as an employee, etc., may result in the cancellation of or a reduction to the tuition benefit.

 Reduced Tuition for Spouse/Children

The reduced tuition program helps you to finance the post-secondary education of your family members. A 50% reduction in the WSU tuition charge is available for your dependents under age 26, your spouse or same-sex domestic partner. The reduced tuition benefit for spouse/children has no credit hour limitation. The dependent tuition benefit does not cover any fees assessed including the registration fee, omnibus fee, fitness center, etc.. This benefit does not apply to the doctoral programs in the School of Medicine, Law School or College of Pharmacy and Allied Health. You must be on the payroll on the last day of Open Registration for your spouse/dependent to qualify for this benefit for a particular term.

The university assists eligible dependents (spouse/children) of eligible employees in their pursuit of higher education at Wayne State University by offering a tuition reduction program.

NOTE: The term 'eligible dependent' as used in this section refers to the eligible employee's spouse and children. The spouse or child does not have to be legally dependent on the employee to be eligible for tuition reduction. See definition(s) of eligible child' and 'eligible spouse' for eligibility requirements.

Eligible employees, on behalf of their eligible dependent, must submit a completed Reduced Tuition Benefit Application for Spouse/Children to Total Compensation and Wellness no later than the fifth day of classes of the term for which the reduction is requested.

The current tuition reduction of 50% of the assessed tuition is applied after tuition restricted scholarship(s), grants and/or fellowships (including tuition paid by a third party) are deducted from the cost of tuition.

A separate application must be submitted for each term for which a reduction in tuition is requested.

Tuition reduction is available to eligible dependents (spouse/children) of eligible employees. Tuition reduction is not available for the professional schools such as: Law School, College of Pharmacy or the School of Medicine. Dependents receiving tuition are also entitled to a waiver of the nonresident portion of tuition.

Dependents do not lose the tuition reduction that has been granted for a term if the spouse/parent loses his/her eligibility status during that term, but no reduction is granted for future terms.

The full amount of any non-tuition charges assessed, including but not limited to registration, late tuition payment, lab and/or course material fees, is the responsibility of the student.

Except as required by union contracts, this policy is subject to change at any time and without notice.
